How Languages Mix (Singlish)

Abstract
Language can be understood as a complex adaptive system that responds to its environment. How it does this is a matter of intense research in linguistics. In this talk, I outline my view of this process. I discuss the way English, Chinese and Singlish talk about time and action, and show that the Singlish time talk is the Chinese talk carried out through English words.
Bio
Bao Zhiming obtained his PhD in linguistics from MIT in 1990. He is currently Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature, National University of Singapore. He has two active areas of research: theoretical linguistics and contact linguistics. He is also interested language and thought in Chinese antiquity. In theoretical linguistics he is known for his work on the structure of tone. In contact linguistics, his focus is on the mechanism of contact-induced linguistic change. He has published in leading journals in linguistics.
